ROCHESTER — For families with young children, a child care crisis can arise at any time: a caregiver is hospitalized, their usual daycare provider is closed or a stay-at-home parent just desperately needs a break.

“A lot of families used to come to us when they’re waiting on some type of assistance, whether it be early learning scholarships or child care assistance,” said Nikki Schreader, a family advocate with Families First of Minnesota. “Now, we’re seeing an uptick because people are just stressed to the max, and we’re happy to provide that help.”

Schreader and Jackie Mosiman, another family advocate, run the Crisis Nursery of Olmsted County, a program that has been offered through Families First since 1994. Its primary mission: coordinating temporary, urgently needed child care for Olmsted County families by appointment.

“We can help with 10 days of paid child care a year,” Schreader said.

Each month, the Crisis Nursery helps around 25 families get that short-term child care through local daycares and foster care providers. An additional 75 families per month receive diapers, a factor that can potentially keep kids out of daycare.
