Taking care of yourself is a critical part of being a good parent. It will help you manage stress, appreciate your time with your children, and keep a balance between parenting and the other things that bring you fulfillment. Try one or two of these ideas to bring balance to your life.

  • Exercise
    Regular exercise helps you cope with stress better than anything else. It's as good for your mind as it is for your body.
  • Be a Lifelong Learner
    Parenting is a permanent classroom. Seek outside input on parenting and family life.
  • Slow Down
    You can't be a good parent, or a good person, unless you are able to take a deep breath once in a while and reflect on your goals.
  • Prioritize
    Keep in mind that everything is not equally important. You can let some things go.
  • Commit to the Whole You
    Remember that you are not only a parent… you are a person. Make time to do things you enjoy that go beyond being a mom or dad.
  • Plan Together Time
    It is difficult to get the whole family together to do routine chores, let alone special activities, but make the effort. When you regularly enjoy each other's company, the rest of life is easier to manage.
